Nunavut Wildlife Management Board

Things we are monitoring

Harvesters are collecting data on a variety of harvested and observed species, including geese and other bird species, beluga, narwhal, caribou, muskox, polar bear, char and others.

About our program

The Nunavut Wildlife Management Board was established in 1994 in accordance with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. Its vision is to conserve wildlife through the application of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit (traditional knowledge) and scientific knowledge. The Community Based Monitoring Network (CBMP) was initiated in 2011 to record harvesting information and local wildlife observations. It focuses on working with local hunters to record ecological knowledge in the form of catch data, wildlife observations, and other ecological and environmental conditions using hand-held computers. The goal of the program is to build a long-term monitoring database, identifying critical harvesting travel routes and areas, important habitats, harvest rates, key conservation concerns, and information about important species.
