Things we are monitoring
The program will be implemented based on 4 critical components:
- HABITAT MONITORING: monitor salmon population abundance, health, and environmental factors and increase understanding via a multi-faceted approach.
- BASELINE MONITORING: quantify population data of various marine mammals and resource extraction industries (recreational and commercial fisheries) to inform marine policy and management.
- COMPLIANCE MONITORING: Monitor large and small vessels in key SRKW areas/high vessel density areas with the goal of understanding stressors such as risk of vessel strike, noise pollution, and physical disturbance.
- CULTURAL COMPONENT: Share cultural information about KELL̵OLEMEĆEN through teaching and knowledge holders
About our program
The establishment of our program is to adequately support our specific needs as W̱SÁNEĆ people, to develop a governance structure and establish a tailored program that increases W̱SÁNEĆ presence in the Salish Sea. Furthermore, this will increase our ability to exercise free prior and informed consent. A guardian’s program is a useful tool for our communities to gather the necessary information using both W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge and western science to become more informed about the activities and long-term cumulative impacts that affect not only the SRKW, but all the associated species within that ecosystem.
